Shepherd Neame employs 7 qualified Brewers to ensure all beers are brewed to the highest quality. They total 160 years of brewing experience. |
Only barley grown in the UK is malted and used to brew Shepherd Neame beers. 6000 tonnes is used, harvested from 2,500 acres of barley. 2500 acres of barley will cover 945 Football pitches. |
All hops used in Shepherd Neame beers and lagers are Kentish and grown within 25 miles of the Brewery. The exception is Whitstable Bay Organic Ale which utilizes organically grown New Zealand Hops. We could not buy any organic hops in Kent. |
All water used in the brewery is extracted from the original 50ft Well beneath the Brewery sunk into the Green Sand. The Brewery uses 44 million gallons of water per annum (the equivalent of 72 Olympic swimming pools) to produce 60 million pints per year. |
Shepherd Neame has won medals at the last 7 biannual International Brewery Awards covering 14 years of professional beer tasting for both lagers and ales, both draught and packaged. |
The beer called Bishops Finger is named after ancient finger post signposts in Kent that show the Pilgrim’s route to Canterbury |
Both Spitfire and Bishops Finger are registered with the European Commission as a Protected Geographical Indicator (PGI) signifying that they are brewed from local ingredients using traditional methods. Another example of this being Champagne coming from the Champagne Region of France and nowhere else. |
Shepherd Neame is the only Brewery in the UK to be awarded the ISO.14001 accreditation. This is an international standard supporting environmental management techniques. |
